What Does Breast Augmentation Involve?

There are several considerations when it comes to breast augmentation.​

 

1. Incision types

​

There are a few types of incisions described for breast augmentation surgery including inframammary, periareolar and transaxillary.  Dr. Klok uses the inframammary incision.​  The inframammary incision is the most commonly used incision and is precisely placed in the natural breast fold beneath the breast. It offers excellent access and control during implant placement, with minimal visible scarring over time.

2. Breast Pocket

​​​

The breast pocket describes where the breast implant will be placed.  The options include subglandular, subfascial, submuscular and dual plane pockets.  

​

Dr. Klok will typically use the subfascial breast pocket for controlled and accurate placement of the implant. The result is very aesthetically pleasing and avoids incisions to the pectoralis muscle.  Dr. Klok will assess your anatomy and desired results to recommend the pocket placement that best supports both your appearance and long-term outcome.

3. Implant Sizing

​

Choosing the right implant size is a highly personalized process. At Sea to Sky Plastic Surgery, we prioritize proportion, symmetry, and your aesthetic goals.

What’s involved in sizing:

• Measurements:
  Dr. Klok will take detailed measurements of your chest wall, breast width, and soft tissue characteristics to determine what implant dimensions suit your frame.

• Visual Aids:
  Implant sizers can help you visualize the range of sizes and make an informed choice.

• Lifestyle Considerations:
  Your activity level, body type, and personal preferences all factor into selecting an implant that will look and feel right for you.

Whether you’re seeking subtle enhancement or a fuller transformation, Dr. Klok will guide you through the sizing process with care, ensuring your final result is harmonious and confidently yours.

4. Possible Breast Lift:

​

In some cases, mastopexy is combined with breast augmentation to reposition the nipple in the center of the breast mound and to remove excess loose skin.  This is often done when the patient has laxity in the breast tissues (ie. loose skin and low nipple position), often resulting from pregnancy, aging, weight loss or genetics.  Dr. Klok understands that patients typically want the least scarring possible, but sometimes it is not an option in some patients to do an augmentation alone without the mastopexy and she will review this with you in detail during the consultation.

5. Closing the incisions:

 

The incisions are closed with dissolving type sutures, dressings are applied and a supportive surgical bra is placed to help reduce swelling and support the newly lifted shape.  The dressings are removed in about 6-8 days post surgery and the bra is to be worn for the first 6 weeks after surgery.

6. Anesthetic:

This surgery is always performed under a general anesthetic at a private surgical centre.  

​​

7. Implant type:

We offer both silicone gel and saline implants.  The silicone gel implants are smooth and round, with 'gummy bear' cohesive type gel.  These are the most commonly used implants.  Each has its advantages depending on your goals, anatomy, and desired feel. Dr. Klok will explain all options during your consultation.

Recovery

• Post-surgery care: You’ll be instructed to wear a special support bra or compression garment to minimize swelling and support the breasts during the healing process.

• Downtime: Recovery typically involves 1-2 weeks of rest. Most people can return to normal activities within a couple of weeks, but strenuous activities, like exercise or heavy lifting, may need to be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

• Swelling and bruising: Some swelling and bruising are normal, but they usually subside after a few weeks. The final results typically take up to 6 months to fully manifest as the breasts settle into their new shape.

 

Results

​Breast augmentation will increase the volume and firmness of the breasts and give a more 'perky' shape.  An augmentation can be quite subtle with smaller implants for those that want a more natural, less noticeable result.  

​

Risks and Considerations

As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, or complications from anesthesia. Dr. Klok will have a thorough consultation with you to discuss your goals and determine if breast augmentation is the right procedure for you.

​

It is important to know that breast implants do not usually last a lifetime.  Implants can shift over time, they can rupture, or the capsule around the implant may become hard and painful (known as capsular contracture) and these situations usually require removal or replacement of the implants.
